A BIT MORE

1. One is permitted to discuss, on Shabbos, matters that pertain to the public welfare and to saving a life.

2. Teaching a child an occupation is a Mitzvah.

3. Alternatively, a widow marries on Thursday and has the Bi'ah on Friday in order to give her three days to spend with her new husband.

4. Rebbi Shimon: One who causes a wound on Shabbos that is Mekalkel (a destructive act) is Chayav if it was an intentional act.

BRIEF INSIGHT

THE PROHIBITION AGAINST IDLE CHATTER

A person should not listen to idle chatter, because the ear is the quickest to burn of all the limbs. The Torah warns us not to listen to idle talk even if no forbidden subjects are being discussed. We do not find that the Torah warns us similarly about the usage of any of our other senses, such as sight (the Torah does not warn us not to look idly at things that are permitted). Why is listening to idle talk an exception? The Maharsha explains that the prohibition is because we must be more careful with our sense of hearing than with our other senses, because when someone is discussing idle topics it easily could lead to subjects that are prohibited. That is the meaning of the Gemara that the ear is the quickest to burn. It is the quickest to burn because it is so easy to transgress the prohibition of listening to forbidden topics, and therefore the ear is the most likeliest limb to suffer from the fire of Gehinom.

QUICK HALACHAH

MARRIAGE ON EREV SHABBOS

According to some opinions it is forbidden to get married on Erev Shabbos and on Motza'i Shabbos because of a Gezeirah that it might lead to Chilul Shabbos (by way of preparing for the wedding on Shabbos). However, some opinions permit marrying on those days, and the Minhag is to get married on Friday as long as the meal was prepared for three days in advance. (Shulchan Aruch EH 64:3)
