PAST CYCLE DEDICATION

BERACHOS 63 (23 Nisan) - dedicated by Mr. Avy Reichman of Queens, NY, l'Iluy Nishmas his father, Dovid ben Avraham, for the day of his Yahrzeit.

SUMMARY

1. In the Beis ha'Mikdash, those who heard someone recite a blessing generally did not answer "Amen."

2. A person should not have male friends or guardians constantly in his house.

3. The Gemara relates different teachings about the importance one must place on Torah study.

4. Torah is acquired primarily through studying in a group.

5. The Gemara relates the different teachings related by various Amora'im regarding the merit of a host.

A BIT MORE

1. Instead of "Amen," they answered "Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuso l'Olam va'Ed."

2. This could lead to an atmosphere of promiscuity, as was the case when Yosef was the caretaker in the house of Potifar.

3. For example, Rebbi Yehudah explains that the verse, "Today you are a people" (in reference to the giving of the Torah), was said long after the giving of the Torah. This teaches that everyday a person must view the Torah as if he just received it.

4. If a person wants to understand the finer nuances of Halachah, such as what blood is pure and what blood is not, he must be able to accept criticism from his teacher without responding.

5. For example, Rebbi Eliezer used to say that if Hashem gave a great blessing to Oved Edom for tidying up in front of the Aron which did not eat or drink, then certainly a person who hosts others and supplies them with food, drink, and hospitality will receive tremendous reward.
