DAF DISCUSSIONS - BEITZAH 39

Sholom Twerski asks:

I was asked this question by someone in my daf shiur and was somewhat embarrassed that I hadn't had the question myself. The Mishna says you're patur for taking out a flame to R"H. The Gemarah is mukim it that he didn't actually carry it, rather he fanned it. Why isn't he chayav mishum Havarah? Don't answer that it's Y"T because there's no issur hotza'ah on Y"T (we don't want to say it's Bais Shammai!).

One could answer that he's patur mishum Hotzaah but chayav mishum Havarah. Dachuk. I'm hoping for a better answer.

Thanks!

Sholom Twerski, Phoenix, AZ

The Kollel replies:

Dear Sholom,

First of all, to "push" the flame alone from Reshus l'Reshus might not involve increasing the flame and then it is not Hav'ara (I am not sure scientificly), and I don't think your answer is Dachuk since Hav'ara is not the subject here at all.

All the best,
