DAF DISCUSSIONS - BEITZAH 20

Yossi Diskind asked:

Question:

(a) FIRST A VOCAB ON LINE16-17 "DEE BEIS HILLEL"WHAT DOES DEE MEANS STANDING ALONE AND IN CONJUNCTION W THE OTHER 2 WORDS

(b) ALSO THEY SAID THAT THE PERSON WHO BROUGHT THE BRISA WAS BEIS SHIMI MABEE IT WAS BEIS HILLEL AND HE JUST WANTED TO MAKE A POINT OR BRING A PROOF

(c) ALSO IT SAIS ON LINE 15 "HE SAID TO HIM IF SOMEONE ASKS YOU WHO SAID THIS U SAY IT IS BEIS SHAMI,WHO DOSNT LEARN SHLEMAI CHAVA FROM SHELEMAI NEDAVA"AND THE GEMARA GOES ON TO SAY IT COULDNT FOLLOW BEIS HILLEL BECUASE THEY DO LEARN OUT ONE FROM THEE OTHER SOOOOOOOOOO? PLEASE HELP ME OUT HERE ASAP HAVE A GOOD SHABAS AND WE WILL SPEAK AGAIN SOON-YOSSI

The Kollel replies:

(a) A Beraisa was reported to Rebbi Yitzchak bar Aba. Rebbi Yitzchak bar Aba responded that the Beraisa expresses the opinion of Beis Shamai, "because if (D'iy) it is Beis Hillel, who holds that the laws of Shalmei Chovah are learned from the laws of Shalmei Nedavah, then so, too, the laws of Olas Chovah do not need their own verse, because they can be learned from the laws of Olas Nedavah."

(b) The next step of the Gemara itself asks that perhaps the Beraisa is expressing the opinion of Beis Hillel. (See the Daf-Outline for a nice summary of the steps of the Gemara.)

(c) If you punctuate your reading of the Gemara differently, then it will make more sense. "He (Rebbi Yitzchak bar Ada) said to him, 'Who said this [Beraisa] to you? It must be Beis Shamai! Because if it is Beis Hillel...'" (see above, (a), for continuation of this line).

Do you attend a Shi'ur or have a Chavrusa? If not, we might be able to connect you with a Shi'ur or with a Chavrusa, if you tell us where you are located.

All the best,
