DAF DISCUSSIONS - YOMA 10

allen schuldenfrei asked:

I am somewhat confused with charts #2 and #3. Please help me understand the relationship of the 2nd chart to the 3rd chart. To me it seems that the left-hand column of the 2nd chart agrees only with Rava's opinion right hand column of the 3rd chart. In other words, the arguement between the Rabbanan and R' Yehuda in the 2nd chart works out fine only according to Rava's opinion in the shivas yemei haprisha of the 3rd chart. If this correct, can we redo the 2 charts to combine them into one.

Thank you for your help.

The Kollel replies:

The left hand side of chart #2 identifies an argument between Rebbi Yehudah and the Rabanan regarding the Lishkas Parhedrin. Chart #3 plugs that argument into the rest of the year and the Shivas Yemei ha'Perishah according to Abaye, or solely the Shivas Yemei ha'Perishah according to Rava. According to Abaye, the Rabanan and Rebbi Yehudah agree that the Lishkas Parhedrin is obligated mid'Oraisa to have a Mezuzah during the Shivas Yamim. Due to this opinion, the Rabanan say that there is a Gezeirah mid'Rabanan that the Lishkah must also have a Mezuzah during the rest of the year (the Rabanan's opinion in chart #2 therefore is relative to chart #3 both during the Shivas Yamim and during the rest of the year). Rebbi Yehudah holds that the Lishkah only has a Mezuzah mid'Rabanan the rest of the year so people shouldn't say that the Kohen Gadol is in jail before Yom Kippur. While chart #2 says "mid'Rabanan" and chart #3 says "Peturah," they are in fact both correct. Rebbi Yehudah held that it had a Mezuzah the rest of the year for the aforementioned reason, but in essence it is exempt from a Mezuzah insofar as Hilchos Mezuzah itself, which is why chart #3, dealing with whether or not it is obligated in Mezuzah, says that it is "Peturah."

All the best,

Yaakov Montrose
