One is permitted to walk up to 2000 Amos in any direction away from the town in which one finds himself at the start of Shabbos. However, it is possible to add up to 2000 Amos to that distance by making an "Eruv Techumim." If that brings one to the next town, sometimes one may walk the entire length of that town as well (but not outside of that town).

The method for determining what is considered the end of the town and exactly how far one may walk, as well as the making of an Eruv Techumim, is not straightforward, and should be done only with the guidance of a competent Halachic authority.
