DAF DISCUSSIONS - BAVA BASRA 121

al davis asked:

At the time of division of Eretz Yisrael among the tribes why did the people in Jerusalem have to compensate those furthur away? At that time it was not known that Jerusalem would be the future site of the Beit Hamikdash

The Kollel replies:

It would seem that there probably was at least vague knowledge amongst Bnei Yisrael that this (at least the approximate area of the Beis Hamikdash) would be the site of the future Beis Hamikdash. After all, this was the site of the Akeida, where Yaakov stopped and realized "Ain Zeh Ki Im Beis Elokim etc.," something that many prophets had foreseen (including Yosef and Binyamin) and was probably passed down as an extremely holy site where the Beis Hamikdash would probably be built. [In the Sefer Beis Hamikdash Ha'Rishon, in the chapter regarding the Beis Hamikdash b'Agadas Chazal, he quotes other Chazal's similar to the one's quoted above.]

All the best,

Yaakov Montrose
