DAF DISCUSSIONS - BAVA METZIA 24

Joel Wiesen asked:

Dear Rabbi Kornfeld,

24B mentions the market of the rabbis. Do we know anything about it, such as what/where it is?

Thanks.

Kol tuv,

Yehuda

The Kollel replies:

The Gemara in Chulin (48b) also relates that Rava followed Rav Nachman in this market in a different incident. The Gemara in a number of places (Eruvin 54b, Avodah Zarah 17a) mentions a certain market that was divided into two sections ("Shuk ha'Elyon" and "Shuk ha'Tachton") of Tzipori, in which Rebbi Elazar ben Padas taught Torah. Apparently, a "Shuk of Rabanan" was an outdoor area where the Rabanan would congregate and learn Torah. Perhaps that had a Beis Medrash in the market there, or the Rabanan themselves were the storeowners. (See Ritva, end of 23b, who writes that the "market of the rabbis" was a place that was frequented by the Rabanan.)
