Here is a list of those who went back from the border in order to supply water and food for their fighting brethren and to repair the roads:

1. Somebody who had built a new house, which was fit for dwelling, but had not yet lived in it at all.

2. Somebody who had planted a new vineyard or orchard but had not yet redeemed the grapes or fruit in the 4th year - the first year that one is permitted to eat the fruits.

3. Somebody who had betrothed his wife but had not yet married her.

However there were categories of men who did not even move from their place to go the border and therefore did not return to help behind the lines, but rather stayed where they were all the time:

4. Somebody who had built a new house and started living in it, but had not yet lived in it for a year.

5. Somebody who had married his betrothed wife but had not yet lived with her for one year.

6. Somebody who had planted a vineyard or orchard and redeemed the grapes or the fruit but had not yet dwelled there for a year.

The latter 3 categories were not allowed to be disturbed for any purpose whatsoever.
