DAF DISCUSSIONS - NEDARIM 20

rukomoinic asked:

A Rabbi talking on Radio sited source, but I could not figure out what was said, apparently neither could the transcript maker.

Transcript snipet as follows:

There's a story in (speaking Hebrew), this track (unintelligible) Talmud that talks - it's talking about sexual relationships. And it's - it says that a husband and wife are allowed to do - basically, they're allowed to do whatever they want with each other sexually. You can enjoy each other, that's OK. That's not heretical. I mean, we're not an ascetic tradition and that's permissible. So then there's a story in which a woman comes before Rav, one of the great rabbis, and says, "My husband did this thing to me, and it's caused me incredible pain." And Rav says, "What can I do? The Torah permits you to him."

The Kollel replies:

Dear Rukomoinic,

Judaism treats interpersonal relationships with great sensitivity. While frank and open discussion about marital intimacy is encouraged and vital for the sake of marital harmony, such discussion when carried out in a public forum (such as a radio show) or impersonal forum (such as an email-discussion forum) is not useful.

If you would like more information about what the classical Jewish sources say about marital intimacy, we strongly recommend that you get in touch with a competent Torah scholar in your area. You can contact Rabbi Aryeh Cohen in Minneapolis at acohen@mnkollel.org .
