DAF DISCUSSIONS - MEGILAH 14

Daniel asks:

Hi...the gemara says that Miriam waited by the river to know if her nevuah would come true if that's so why did she get rewarded for every one to wait for her when she had tzaraas if the only reason she waited wasn't for moshe it was just for her own reason to know if the nevuah would come true??

Daniel, Brooklyn USA

The Kollel replies:

Shalom Rav,

If someone performs a Mitzvah she'Lo Lishmah (with an ulterior motive), it is still considered a motive, all the more so here where it was in order to protect her brother. Moreover, the Gemara in Pesachim (8a-b) specifically states that somebody who gives Tzedakah in order that his sick son should live is a perfect Tzadik (i.e., his Mitzvah is complete).

Rashi explains that this is because he certainly had in mind to perform the Mitzvah as well. That certainly would apply in the case of Miriam, too.

May we soon merit the coming of Mashi'ach and the rebuilding of the Beis ha'Mikdash.
