DAF DISCUSSIONS - BERACHOS 35

Max Preschel asked:

Dear Sirs,

After the discussion, I still am at a loss to figure out why there is a special beracha for wine and a special beracha for bread.

Thank you for your help.

The Kollel replies:

Greetings,

The Gemara concludes that wine and bread have a special blessing because they makes a person feel full and satisfied. (Wine also makes man happy, but that is not a reason for giving it a separate Berachah.)

Other foods (such as olive oil, as the Gemara mentions) might nourish, but they do not make a person feel satisfied like bread and wine.

Our Sages understood that the element of making one feel satisfied warrants a special Berachah.

I hope this was helpful for you.
