DAF DISCUSSIONS - BERACHOS 2

Aaron Pacanowski asked:

On the first Omud of Gemara the Gemara says that one of the reasons to why it starts with the night and not with the day is because it says "Vuyehi Erev Uyehi Voker Yom Echod". My question is why later on in the Masechta it says Brachos 4:1 when it talks about the Tefillos it says Shacharis then Minchoh then Maariv and then Mussof. Why does it start with the day? And if you'd answer that Tefillos starts in the day for some reason then you could ask why doesn't it go in order it should say Shacharis Mussof Minchah Maariv and go in order? Also what about Neilah?

Aaron Pacanowski, Melbourne, Australia

The Kollel replies:

Being that the reason the Tefilos were instituted the way they were was in order to be like the Korbanos of the day, which start with the Korban Tamid of the morning and end with the burning of the Chalavim v'Aivarim at night (see Berachos 26b), or they were instituted by the Avos with Shacharis being institued by Avraham etc., it makes sense that the Mishnah would start with Shacharis. Musaf (and Neilah) is not as common a Tefilah as the other three, and is therefore stated last.

All the best,

Yaakov Montrose
