What does the Torah mean when it writes "Va'titma ha'Aretz" and "Va'taki ha'Aretz eschem"? Since when does a country have a living soul?

1.

Ramban and Moshav Zekenim, Rosh (28): Each of the seventy nations that Hashem created has its own country and falls under the jurisdiction of a star or a Mazal, 1 which, in turn, is governed by its own angel. 2 And they in turn, are governed by Hashem, the G-d of the angels and the Master of masters. The one exception is Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael which Hashem chose for Himself. 3 Consequently, He sanctified Yisrael, who dwell in His land with the Kedushah of Arayos and the other Mitzvos in His Name, and it is on condition that they adhere to them that they are permitted to live there. 4 And it is due to the Kedushah of Eretz Yisrael which does not tolerate the sins listed in this Parshah, that it casts out those who perform them. The Kusim also served idolatry in their land; the lions attacked them only when they came to Eretz Yisrael.

1

Ramban and Moshav Zekenim: As the Pasuk indicates in Devarim 32:2.

2

Ramban and Moshav Zekenim: See Dani'el, 10:13.

3

Ramban and Moshav Zekenim: See Devarim 4:19 and Yirmiyah, 11:4. Even though the Pasuk Daniel 10:21 calls Micha'el "Sarchem" (), he merely requests mercy for Yisrael.

4

Ramban and Moshav Zekenim: Hence the Pasuk writes - in 20:22 - "u'Shemartem es Kol Chukosai ve'es Kol Mishpatai ... ve'Lo Saki ha'Aretz eschem". See Ramban, who elaborates on the difference between Yisrael and the other nations and on the special qualities of Eretz Yisrael.

2)

Since Hashem does not punish without warning, where were the Cana'anim and the other nations warned about Arayos?

1.

Ramban and Moshav Zekenim (citing Sanhedrin 56b): Traditionally, they were warned already from the time of Adam and No'ach - even though the Torah did not record the warning specifically.

3)

Seeing as the Egyptians were equally guilty of the sin of Arayos, why were they not also expelled from their land?

1.

Ramban: Refer to 18:25:1:1.
