1)

What was Moshe referring to when he said "and He rescued me from the sword of Par'oh"?

1.

Rashi #1: When Dasan and Aviram informed Par'oh that Moshe killed the Egyptian and Par'oh wanted to have Moshe killed, Moshe's neck turned to marble.

2.

Rashi #2: Refer to 4:11:2:1.

3.

Yerushalmi B'rachos, 9:1: 'When Par'oh seized Moshe and ordered his head to be severed, the sword slipped from his neck on to the neck of the executioner and killed him.

2)

Why does it say "ve'Shem ha'Echad"? It should say "ve'Shem ha'Sheni"!

1.

Moshav Zekenim #1: It says 'second' only if it said 'first'. 1

2.

Moshav Zekenim #2: He called him Eliezer because Hashem helped him, and Hashem is one. 2

3.

Moshav Zekenim #3: Moshe loved each like an only child.

4.

Moshav Zekenim #4, Riva #1, Hadar Zekenim: A Midrash says that Moshe found Hashem saying 'Eliezer my son says that a Parah is two years old, and a calf is a yearling.' Moshe prayed that R. Eliezer should descend from him. 3

5.

Tosfos ha'Shalem (3): Yisro gave his daughter to Moshe only on condition that he swore that the first son will be designated to idolatry. 4

6.

Riva #2: There was [much] time between the two births.

7.

R. Weiss: A parent should treat each child like an only child (instruct him according to his nature, not like he trained his older siblings).

1

Moshav Zekenim: Regarding Bereishis, it says "Yom Echad" and "Yom Sheni"! There is different, for the Torah wanted to count seven days. However, it says "ha'Keves ha'Echad" and "ha'Keves ha'Sheni"! (Therefore, this is a poor answer.)

2

Hadar Zekenim: It is not proper to write 'Sheni' regarding Hashem. Moshav Zekenim citing R. Levi - he mentioned Hashem's mame on Eliezer, but said about Gershom "Nochriyah", because Yisro gave his daughter to Moshe only on condition that he swear that the first son will be for idolatry. (Refer to 18:3:152:1*.) Due to this, Gershom's son Yehonason served idolatry

3

Moshav Zekenim: This is difficult. Who says that he found Hashem saying so before he named Eliezer, and not after Matan Torah?!

4

See Targum Yonasan, 4:4. Oznayim la'Torah: And it is therefore considered as if the two were from different nations and were not related.

3)

Moshe should have given this name to his first son, for he was saved from Par'oh's sword before he became a stranger in a foreign land!

1.

Rosh, Riva: He was not totally saved from Par'oh until those who slandered him died (became poor). He was still worried that they would find him and inform Par'oh. 1

2.

Tosfos ha'Shalem (7, citing R. Yehudah ha'Chasid:): The custom was to call the name for the most recent miracle. 2

3.

Moshav Zekenim citing R. Levi: He mentioned Hashem's name on Eliezer, but said about Gershom "Nochriyah", because Yisro gave his daughter to Moshe only on condition that he swear that the first son will be for idolatry. (Refer to 18:3:152:1*.) Due to this, Gershom's son Yehonason served idolatry.

1

Oznayim la'Torah: Just as one does not recite Birchas ha'Gomel until the danger has passed See Oznayim la'Torah DH 'Vayatzileini ... '.

2

I.e. now I ceased to be a Ger (refer to 18:3:151:1 - PF). Moshav Zekenim citing R. Moshe of Pontaiza says similarly.

QUESTIONS ON RASHI

4)

Rashi writes that Moshe's neck turned to marble, to save him from Par'oh's sword. Above (4:11), he wrote that Hashem made Par'oh dumb, his servants deaf, and the executioner blind!

1.

Moshav Zekenim: Initially, his neck turned to marble, to save him from the sword. They wanted to kill him in a different way, and then they became mute, deaf and blind.
