"ve?Irad Yalad es Mechuya'el?. Since when do men give birth?
Rashi: "Yalad" has a dual meaning. In connection with a woman it means 'gave birth;' whereas in connection with a man it means 'inseminated?.
QUESTIONS ON RASHI
Rashi writes: "'And Irad fathered (Yalad)' - When the Torah writes that a father had a child, sometimes it uses the active tense, 'Yalad' (i.e. fathered), and sometimes the causative tense, 'Holid' (caused the birth of)." When is each term used?
Gur Aryeh: The causative tense is appropriate when a significant result is achieved; but for an ordinary result, a normal active verb is sufficient. Our verse is referring to the family of Kayin, which would be wiped out in the flood, so the Torah uses the term "Yalad." But when it later refers to the birth of Avraham, who would produce the Jewish nation, it uses the term "Holid" (11:27).
