THE NUMBER OF MEALS THAT MUST BE EATEN (Yerushalmi Halachah 7 Daf 10b)

(a)

(Mishnah): R. Eliezer says that a person must eat 14 meals in the Sukah during Sukos, one in the daytime and one at night (for every day of the seven days).

(b)

Chachamim: There is no specific requirement, except for the first night of Yom Tov (when one must eat a meal in the Sukah).

(c)

R. Eliezer's 2nd law: One who did not eat a meal on the first night of Yom Tov can compensate the last night of Yom Tov.

(d)

Chachamim: There is no way to compensate, as the Pasuk states (Koheles 1, 15), "Something crooked cannot be fixed and something lacking cannot be counted".

(e)

Gemara (R. Eliezer's source): The Pasuk here states "you shall dwell" and the Pasuk elsewhere states (Vayikra 8, 35), "and you shall dwell at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting day and night". Just as the dwelling there was done in the nighttime like the daytime, so the dwelling here (Sukos) must be done in the nighttime like the daytime.

(f)

R. Yochanan quoting R. Yishmael: The Pasuk mentions the 15th in reference to Pesach (Vayikra 23, 6) and it mentions the 15th in reference to Sukos (Vayikra 23, 34). Just as on the 15th of Nisan (Pesach) one must eat on the first night but after that is optional; so too on the 15th of Tishrei (Sukos), one must eat on the first night but after that is optional.

(g)

Question (Chevraya): If so, just as one may not eat (a meal) in the late afternoon of Erev Pesach in order to eat the Matzah with an appetite; so one should not be able to eat in the late afternoon of Erev Sukos in order to eat the bread with an appetite(?)

(h)

Question (R. Zeira): If so, just as one must eat a Kzayis (an olive's amount) of Matzah, so one must eat a Kzayis of grain in the Sukah(?)

(i)

R. Hoshiya: On each of the seven days, one is obligated to eat a Kzayis of grain.

(j)

R. Berachya: R. Yochanan (f) and R. Hoshiya (i) disagree (about the obligation to eat after the first day).

(k)

Rav Avuna: They do not disagree. R. Yochanan is discussing when he intended to fulfill his obligation on the first night of Sukos; if he did, anything after that is optional. R. Hoshiya is discussing when he did not intend to fulfill his obligation on the first night - he can compensate at any time during the festival.

(l)

Beraisa (R. Eliezer): If a person did not build a Sukah before the festival, he may not build it on the festival.

(m)

Question (Beraisa from Bar Kafra): If his Sukah fell down during the festival, he may rebuild it on the festival.

(n)

Answer (R. Acha quoting R. Chinana): R. Eliezer penalizes him when he did not build his Sukah before the festival.

(o)

Question: The opinion of R. Eliezer appears to have switched -

1.

He first said that a person must have 14 meals in his Sukah; but at the end of the Mishnah he said that one can compensate on the last day of the festival for missing his first meal? (Why is he not required to make up any missing meal from one of the other days of the festival?)

(p)

Answer (R. Acha): Only eating on the first night is crucial and needs compensation; but R. Eliezer's ruling that he learned from the Miluim ((e) earlier) that one must eat 14 meals is the ideal way of performing the Mitzvah but is not crucial.
