MOVING WINDOW PLUGS AND BOLTS (Yerushalmi Perek 17 Halachah 7 Daf 83b)

(a)

(Mishnah): ('Window' refers to a hole in the wall.) R. Eliezer says, if a window stopper (a board or curtain used to cover the opening) is tied [to the wall] and hangs (does not drag on the ground), one may use it to plug up a window. If not, one may not plug with it.

(b)

Chachamim say, in either case one may plug with it.

(c)

All covers of Kelim that have handles may be moved on Shabbos.

(d)

R. Yosi says, this applies to covers of land [e.g. pits]. One may move covers of Kelim in any case.

(e)

(Gemara) Question: What is a dragging bolt (mentioned in the Mishnah in Eruvin 10:11)?

(f)

Answer (R. Yochanan): It is tied, even if it is not hanging.

1.

R. Yochanan: Chilfai drew me and showed me the bolt of Rebbi's house - it was tied, even though it was not hanging.

(g)

(R. Yochanan): The individual's opinion here (R. Eliezer) is like the Stam opinion there (the first Tana, who permits locking with a dragging bolt only in the Mikdash). The individual's opinion there (R. Yehudah, who permits even outside the Mikdash) is like the Stam opinion here (Chachamim. We equate the laws of a window plug and a bolt.)

(h)

Question (R. Yosi, to R. Yirmeyah): How do we rule? (The Stam opinions contradict each other!)

(i)

Answer (R. Yirmeyah): Since R. Yochanan said "Chilfai drew me and showed me the bolt of Rebbi's house - it was tied, even though it was not hanging'', this teaches that we do like R. Yehudah.

(j)

(Rav Huna citing R. Shmuel): The Halachah follows R. Yehudah. [It is permitted] only if it is tied in the door [itself].

(k)

(R. Yanai, the father-in-law of R. Ami): [It is permitted] only if it is tied in the door, through something (e.g. a rope) that can hold it up.

1.

R. Lazar's bolt was tied with a reed (it is weak).

(l)

If it came off (the rope broke), it is forbidden.

(m)

If part [of the bolt] broke [and it does not fill the hole] - R. Yakov bar Acha citing Rabanan says that he pushes it with his fingertips [until it enters tightly].

(n)

(Mishnah): All covers of Kelim...

(o)

(Aba bar Kahana citing R. Chiya bar Ashi citing Rav): The Halachah follows R. Yosi.

HADRAN ALACH PEREK KOL HA'KELIM

2)

HOW MUCH ONE MAY CLEAR OUT (Yerushalmi Perek 18 Halachah 1 Daf 84a)

(a)

(Mishnah): We may clear out even four or five boxes of straw or grain, to make room for guests or Talmidim in the Beis Medrash, but one may not clear out a storehouse;

(b)

We may clear out Tahor Terumah, Demai (doubtfully tithed produce), Ma'aser Rishon from which Terumah was taken, Ma'aser Sheni and Hekdesh that were redeemed, and dry lupines, for poor people eat it;

(c)

We may not clear out Tevel, Ma'aser Rishon from which Terumah was not taken, Ma'aser Sheni and Hekdesh that were not redeemed, Luf (a type of onion) or mustard;

(d)

R. Shimon ben Gamliel permits Luf, for ravens eat it.

(e)

(Gemara) Question (R. Ze'ira, to R. Yoshiyah): What is the Shi'ur of the boxes?

(f)

Answer (R. Yoshiyah): We learn what is concealed from what is explicit. A Mishnah teaches that they use three boxes, each of three Sa'im, to take Shekalim from the chamber.

(g)

(Mishnah): If one was Motzi enough [raw, i.e. undiluted] wine to mix [with water] to comprise a cup [he is liable].

(h)

Question (R. Ze'ira, to R. Yoshiyah): What is the Shi'ur of cups [that the Mishnah refers to]?

(i)

Answer (R. Yoshiyah): We learn what is concealed from what is explicit. R. Chiyah taught that the four cups [of wine on Seder night], they have an Italki Revi'is of wine [in all. I.e. each cup has a quarter Italki Revi'is of raw wine. This is the Shi'ur for Hotza'ah.]
