1)

ONE IS LIABLE ONLY FOR PERMANENT KNOTS (Yerushalmi Perek 15 Halachah 2 Daf 77b)

(a)

Question: Do [Rabanan] argue with R. Eliezer ben Yakov [who permits tying in front of an animal]?

(b)

Answer: Since it taught that Chachamim agree with R. Meir about ropes tied on covers over land, that one may move [the knot to cause it to open], unravel, untie and cut them [on Yom Tov]; on Shabbos one may move, but not unravel, untie or cut;

1.

Ropes tied on Kelim, on Shabbos it is permitted, and there is no need to teach [that it is permitted] on Yom Tov.

2.

Conclusion: This shows that Rabanan] do not argue with R. Eliezer ben Yakov. (Since one may untie them, this shows that it is not a proper knot.)

(c)

(Mishnah): [One may tie a belt on a bucket,] but not a rope. R. Yehudah permits.

(d)

(R. Ba): Our Mishnah discusses a rope of a bucket, a rope used to lower [a bucket to draw water. This is why Chachamim forbid. R. Yehudah permits if he ties it only temporarily - PNEI MEIR.]

(e)

(Mishnah - R. Yehudah): The general rule is, one is not liable for any knot that is not permanent.

(f)

Question: This implies that Rabanan disagree!

(g)

Answer #1: (Really, they agree.) Since the previous law was in the name of R. Yehudah, also this was taught in the name of R. Yehudah.

(h)

Answer #2 (R. Shmuel citing R. Ze'ira): [Rabanan disagree. R. Yehudah] means that any [kind of] knot (e.g. a bow) that is [normally] temporary, and he made it for a limited time, one is not liable for it (but if he made it to endure, he is liable for it).

2)

WHAT WE SHOULD DO ON SHABBOS AND YOM TOV (Yerushalmi Perek 15 Halachah 3 Daf 78a)

(a)

(Mishnah): One may fold garments, even four or five times;

(b)

One may spread bed linens on Shabbos night for the sake of Shabbos day, but not on Shabbos for the sake of Motzei Shabbos;

(c)

R. Yishmael says, one may fold garments or prepare a bed on Yom Kipur [if it is on Erev Shabbos] for the sake of Shabbos. Chelev of [Korbanos of] Shabbos may be offered on [Motza'ei Shabbos, even if it is] Yom Kipur, but Chelev of Yom Kipur may not be offered on [Motzei Yom Kipur if it is] Shabbos;

(d)

R. Akiva says, Chelev of Shabbos may not be offered on Yom Kipur, nor may Chelev of Yom Kipur be offered on Shabbos.

(e)

(Gemara): People of R. Yanai's academy say that two people may not fold together.

(f)

(R. Chagai citing R. Shmuel bar Nachman): Two people may not fold together on Shabbos. One folds against the other end of the bench [on which he sits], it is as it two [people fold].

(g)

(R. Chagai citing R. Shmuel bar Nachman): Shabbosos and Yomim Tovim were given only for eating and drinking. [However,] since the mouth toils [the entire week and has little time for Torah, Chachamim) permitted him to engage in Divrei Torah. (OHR ZARU'A)

(h)

(R. Berachiyah citing R. Shmuel bar Nachman): Shabbosos and Yomim Tovim were given only to engage in Divrei Torah.

(i)

A Beraisa supports [R. Chagai], and a Beraisa supports [R. Berachiyah].

1.

Support (for R. Chagai - Beraisa): How does one conduct [on Shabbos and Yom Tov]? Either he eats and drinks, or he engages in Divrei Torah.

2.

Support (for R. Berachiyah - Beraisa) Question: It says "Atzeres la'Shem Elokecha'', and it says "Atzeres Tihyeh Lachem''!

i.

How [do we fulfill both]? Give part [of Yom Tov] to Talmud Torah, and part to eating and drinking. (We explained this like PNEI MOSHE.)

(j)

(R. Avahu): "Shabbos la'Shem'' - rest like Hash-m. Just like Hash-m ceased from speech (He created through speech), also you must cease from speech [not needed for Shabbos].

(k)

A case occurred in which a Chasid went to stroll in his vineyard on Shabbos, and saw a breach. He thought to fence it on Motza'ei Shabbos. He said, since I thought [on Shabbos] to fence it, I will never fence it!

1.

What did ha'Kadosh Baruch Hu do for him? He prepared for him a caper branch and it went into [the breach] and filled it, and from it he was financed all his life.

(l)

(R. Chanina): With difficulty, they permitted greeting people on Shabbos.

(m)

(R. Chiya bar Ba): When R. Shimon ben Yochai's mother would speak too much on Shabbos, he would tell her "it is Shabbos.''

3)

THE KEDUSHAH OF SHABBOS AND YOM KIPUR

(a)

(Beraisa): One may not ask his needs [in prayer] on Shabbos.

(b)

Question (R. Ze'ira, to R. Chiya bar Ba): May one say "Re'enu Parnesenu'' (support us) on Shabbos? (This is in the third Brachah of Birkas ha'Mazon.)

(c)

Answer (R. Chiya bar Ba): This is the text of the Brachah [that we say. We do not change on Shabbos from the text during the week.]

(d)

(Beraisa): One may rinse cups, bowls and plates on Shabbos night for the morning, in the morning for midday, and at midday for [the afternoon, i.e. the time of] Minchah. From Minchah and onwards is forbidden. Cups are permitted, for there is no fixed time for drinking.

(e)

(R. Yirmeyah citing R. Ze'ira citing R. Chiya bar Ashi): A clever woman rinses a cup here, a bowl here, and a plate here, and it turns out that she drops water on [the entire floor of] her house on Shabbos [so dust will not rise. One may not directly sprinkle water on the floor with this intent.]
