*********************GIRSA SECTION*********************

We recommend using the textual changes suggested by the Bach and the marginal notes of the Vilna Shas. This section is devoted to any other important corrections that Acharonim have pointed out in the Gemara, Rashi and Tosfos.

[1] Gemara 80a [line 40]:

"Zefes v'Gofris ... Nekev Katan" זפת וגפרית ... נקב קטן

The Bach (#3) erases these words, since Rashi is Gores the word "Katan" in the Mishnah, as we pointed out above in the Girsa section to 78b, #3. These words also do not appear in Dikdukei Sofrim #4.

[2] Gemara 80b [line 5]:

"she'Higi'u l'Firkan v'Lo Higi'u l'Shanim" שהגיעו לפרקן ולא הגיעו לשנים

The word "l'Shanim" לשנים does not appear in Dikdukei Sofrim #7, Rabeinu Chananel, Rashi, or Tosfos. It also does not appear in the Oxford manuscript and all early printings of the Gemara.

[3] Gemara 80b [line 30]:

The words "ked'Darash Rebbi Nechemyah l'Chavrei" כדדרש רבי נחמיה לחברי

should be "ked'Darash Chavrai" כדדרש חברי

(This is the Girsa in the Oxford manuscript. A similar Girsa is found in Dikdukei Sofrim #60 and in the early printings. The Maharshal emended the Girsa to read as it does in our printing of the Gemara.)

[4] Gemara 80b [line 31]:

The words "u'Machtei b'Andipi u'Mis" ומחתיה באנדיפי ומית

(a) should be "u'Machtei b'Andipei" ומחתיה באנדיפי (Dikdukei Sofrim #70)

(b) the word "u'Mis" does not appear in the early printings of the Gemara, Ein Yakov, or Rabeinu Chananel.

[5] Rashi 80b DH Shenasos [the second one] : ד"ה שנתות

The words "v'Iy Efshar b'Lashon Zeh" ואי אפשר בלשון זה

should be "v'Iy Efshi b'Lashon Zeh" ואי אפשי בלשון זה

[6] Rashi 80b DH Kilkulo Zehu Tikuno ד"ה קלקולו זהו תקונו:

The words "v'Rabosai Mefarshin Kilkulo Loven" ורבותי מפרשין קלקולו לובן

should be "v'Rabosai Mefarshin Kilkulo b'Loven" ורבותי מפרשין קלקולו בלובן

(a)After Achashverosh' anger against Vashti subsided, he remembered her beauty and longed for her. His courtiers therefore suggested that he appoint officers to gather all the good-looking virgins in his kingdom to the palace, where they were to be placed in the royal harem under the care of Hegai. They were to be given all the perfumery that they asked for, and to await their turn to be called before the king after a year's preparation.

(b)Whatever each maiden asked for to take with her to the king (such as games or music) was given to her. Once there, she would spend the night with the king, returning to the second harem the following morning, to the care of Shashgaz, the king's chamberlain. There she would remain indefinitely unless the king would call for her.

(c)When Esther's turn came to spend the night with the Achashverosh, she asked for nothing, taking with her only what Hegai, the king's chamberlain instructed her to take. Nevertheless, she found favor in the eyes of all who beheld her, not least of all Achashverosh, who was infatuated by her.
