THE ENTICEMENT TO SERVE BA'AL PE'OR (Yerushalmi Halachah 2 Daf 51b)

(a)

What did Bil'am ha'Rasha do? [We say that he was Mechadesh Aveiros] because he gave counsel to Balak ben Tzipor to make Yisrael fall through the sword;

1.

He said to him "the G-d of this nation hates Zenus. Stand up your daughters for Zenus [with them], and you will rule over them."

2.

Balak: Will [my people] heed me?! Bil'am said, stand up your daughters, and they will see, and they will heed you. This is why it says [that Tzur, Kozbi's father, was] "Rosh Umos Beis Av b'Midyan Hu." (The leaders sent their daughters, and then everyone else did. Targum Yonason (Bamidbar 25:15, 31:8) says that Tzur was Balak.)

3.

What did they do? They built curtains and tents from Beis ha'Yeshimon until Har ha'Sheleg, and put women there selling kinds of cakes. They put the old woman outside, and the young girl inside;

4.

Yisrael were eating and drinking. One would go out to stroll in the market. He took an item from the merchant, and the old woman was selling it for its value. The girl said to him "come take it for less." So it was on the first day, second day and third day, and she would say to him "from now and onwards you are like a member of the household. Enter and choose for yourself";

5.

Once he entered, there was a flask of Amoni wine, which is hard and entices the body to Zenus, and its smell spread. Their [Stam] wine was not yet forbidden to Yisrael [mid'Rabanan] like Yayin Nesech of Nochrim.

6.

She would say "do you want to drink a cup?", and he says yes, and she gives to him. Once he drank, the wine burned inside him like snake venom. He says to her "consent to [have Bi'ah with] me", and she says "you want that I should consent to you?", and he says yes;

7.

Immediately she takes out an image of [Ba'al] Pe'or from her garment, and says "bow to this, and I will consent to you." He says "will I bow to idolatry?!" She says "if you will not bow, expose [your anus] to it."

i.

This is what Chachamim taught, that one who is Po'er to Ba'al Pe'or, this is its Avodah, and one who throws a rock at Markulis, this is its Avodah.

ii.

Note: Most Meforshim say that "Po'er" includes excreting in front of it.

iii.

She would say to him "separate from Toras Moshe, and I will consent to you." This is why it says "Hemah Ba'u Va'al Pe'or va'Yinazru la'Boshes va'Yihyu Shikutzim k'Ahavam" - until they became detested to their father in Heaven.

(b)

(R. Lazar): Just like this nail cannot separate from the door without some wood [sticking to it], so it is impossible to separate from Pe'or without deaths.

(c)

A case occurred with Sovsah from Ulam. He rented a donkey to a Nochris [who wanted to ride] in order to bow to Pe'or. Once they reached the house of Pe'or, she said "wait for me here until I enter and bow to Pe'or. Once she left, he said "wait for me here until I enter and do like you did";

1.

What did he do? He entered, excreted, and cleaned [his anus] with the nose of Pe'or. Everyone was praising in front of him, and saying "no one ever did like this one did!"

(d)

A case occurred in which Menachem, the [esteemed] man of Gufsah Aryeh was rolling barrels (engaged in his work), and the Sar of Pe'or came to him at night. [Menachem] took a spit, and the Sar fled from him;

1.

Note: Pirkei d'R. Eliezer (45) says after Chet ha'Egel, damaging angels were sent to destroy Yisrael. One of them survived, but was incarcerated; it became called Pe'or.

2.

The Sar came to him on the second night, and said to him "Menachem, why do you curse me? Fear me!" He said, I will not curse you any more.

i.

Note: Emek ha'Netziv (on Sifri 131) says that this shows how much Pe'or strives to make Yisrael stumble. The Ra'avad on the Sifri explains that the first night, Menachem revealed his Ever or urinated at it. The next night, the Sar said "it will not help to curse me, for you already accepted me for a god."
