ROSH HASHANAH 26 (5 Sivan) - Dedicated l'Zecher Nishmas Reb Chaim Aryeh ben Aharon Stern Z'L by Shmuel Gut of Brooklyn, N.Y.

SUMMARY

1. There is a dispute about whether using a bull's horn is valid for the Mitzvah of Shofar on Rosh Hashanah.

2. The Gemara shows that a number of scholars found the definition to a verse by traveling to a different country.

3. The maidservant of Rebbi inadvertently taught Rebbi's students the meaning of many words in the Torah and Mishnah.

4. There is a dispute about whether the Shofar used on Rosh Hashanah should be bent or straight.

5. The Gemara explains the reasoning behind the dispute (#4).

A BIT MORE

1. Tana Kama: It is not valid, since it is called a "Keren" and not a "Shofar." Rebbi Yosi: It is valid, as all Shofaros are also called "Keren." (The Amora'im argue about the exact nature of the dispute between the Tana Kama and Rebbi Yosi.)

2. For example, Rebbi Akiva went to Africa and heard that the people call a "Me'ah" (a denomination of coin) a "Kesitah." This helped him understand the verse, "[he bought the portion of the field...] for one hundred Kesitah" (Bereishis 33:19).

3. For example, the students did not understand the meaning of the Mishnaic word, "Seirugin." One day they entered the Beis Midrash in various groups instead of coming at the same time. She said to them, "Until when are you going to enter Seirugin, Seirugin?"

4. Rebbi Levi rules like Rebbi Yehudah that it should be bent, unlike the Tana Kama who says that it should be straight.

5. Rebbi Yehudah says that it should be bent, because a bent Shofar represents a person who is bent over and humbles himself while praying before the judgment of Hashem.
