PAST DEDICATIONS

YOMA 40 (15 Teves) - dedicated by Dr. Moshe and Rivka Snow in memory of Rivka's mother, Rebbetzin Leah bas Rav Yosef (Rabinowitz), the Manostrishtcher Rebbetzin, whose Yahrzeit is 15 Teves.

SUMMARY

1. There is a dispute about when the Se'ir la'Azazel is killed.

2. The designation of the goats may not be switched once the lottery is drawn.

3. It is forbidden even to change sides without switching the designation of the goats.

4. The Kohen Gadol must place the lot on the Chatas goat immediately after the lottery.

5. The Gemara concludes that the lottery causes the goat to be designated as a Chatas.

A BIT MORE

1. Rebbi Yehudah: The Se'ir la'Azazel may not be killed until the blood of its Chatas counterpart is sprinkled. Rebbi Shimon: The Se'ir la'Azazel must not be killed until the Kohen Gadol recites Viduy.

2. It was a favorable sign if the lot of "la'Hashem" was drawn by the Kohen Gadol's right hand. However, if it was drawn by the left hand, it was forbidden for him to switch it to the right hand and change the designation of the goat.

3. In theory, the Torah should permit the switching of the lot from the left hand to the right hand if the goat on the left also is switched to the right, since the goats remain designated as their lots were drawn. However, we do not want the Tzedukim to say that we are a nation that depends on favorable signs and omens, and that manipulates those signs and omens to be the way we want them to be (see Rashi, Me'iri).

4. However, there is no need for the lot to stay on the goat for longer than a moment, and certainly not until the time it is slaughtered.

5. Merely proclaiming that this goat should be a Chatas, as is done by an ordinary person bringing his Korban Chatas, does not suffice when determining which goat will be offered as the Chatas on Yom Kippur. This is derived from the verse regarding the lottery, "And it will make it a Chatas."
