12th Cycle Dedication

ERCHIN 6-9 - Two weeks of study material have been dedicated by Mrs. Estanne Abraham Fawer to honor the twelfth Yahrzeit of her father, Rav Mordechai ben Eliezer Zvi (Rabbi Morton Weiner) Z'L, who passed away on 18 Teves 5760. May the merit of supporting and advancing Dafyomi study -- which was so important to him -- during the weeks of his Yahrzeit serve as an Iluy for his Neshamah.

SUMMARY

1. Although gifts from Nochrim are not accepted when we start building the Beis ha'Mikdash, certain gifts are accepted towards the end of the building of the Beis ha'Mikdash.

2. The Gemara discusses what to do with Terumah separated by a Nochri from his own grain.

3. The Gemara discusses whether a person may borrow money that he designated for charity (before he gives it to the caretaker of the charity).

4. The Gemara discusses the wording used to permit borrowing in the case above (#3).

5. The Mishnah discusses whether a person who is on his deathbed or being led out to be executed has a set value or actual value.

A BIT MORE

1. At the start of the building of the Beis ha'Mikdash, gifts from Nochrim could stall the building process (see Rashi and Tosfos here). However, at the end of the building process, we may accept materials that will be made into items that will not be recognizable as being donated by a Nochri.

2. If his intention was that the Terumah should go to wherever the Terumah separated by a Jew goes, then it is given to a Kohen. If we are unsure about why he separated the Terumah, it is set aside to rot. Perhaps he meant that it should be Hekdesh.

3. Rav Nachman: He may borrow it for himself, but he may not to lend it to others. When he separated it for charity his intention was that if he needed to borrow it he would be able to, and he would pay it back later. Rebbi Yochanan: He may borrow it even to lend it to someone else.

4. Rebbi Zeira: He may borrow this money only if he said, "It is upon me to give this money to charity," but not if he said, "This money is charity." Rava: In any case he may borrow the money.

5. Tana Kama: He has neither. Rebbi Chanina ben Akiva: He has a set value, because the novelty of a set value is that we do not look at actual value.
