SUMMARY

1. If a bird flies into anything that slips and slides, there is no concern for mortal wounds to the limbs.

2. If a bird flies into a glue board and falls to the ground together with the board, according to Rav Ashi the bird is Kosher, while according to Ameimar there is a concern for mortal wounds to the limbs.

3. If most of the upper part of the large ribs of an animal are broken, the animal is a Tereifah.

4. Ula says in the name of Ben Zakai that if the majority of the ribs on one side of an animal are uprooted from the spine, the animal is a Tereifah. Rebbi Yochanan disagrees.

5. If one rib of an animal is broken together with a portion of the vertebra, the animal is a Tereifah.

6. If the spinal column of a human corpse is missing two vertebrae, it is not Metamei b'Ohel, according to Beis Shamai. Beis Hilel maintains that if it is missing only one vertebra, it is not Metamei b'Ohel.

7. Shmuel maintains that if the majority of the skull of an animal is smashed, it is a Tereifah.

8. Shmuel maintains that if the flesh that covers the majority of the paunch of an animal is injured, it is a Tereifah.

9. If a wolf or a larger predator claws an animal, it renders it a Tereifah. Rebbi Yehudah maintains that a large animal is a Tereifah only if it is clawed by a lion.

10. Rav Chisda maintains that if a kid or lamb is clawed by a cat or a marten, it is a Tereifah.

11. Beribi maintains that a cat that claws a kid or lamb renders it a Tereifah only if an effort is being made to save the victim from the cat.

A BIT MORE

1. For example, if a bird flew into fine sand, or into legumes (other than fenugreek), or into peas, there is no concern for mortal wounds to the limbs since these items slip and give way and do not cause impact injuries.

2. According to the first version, if only one wing was stuck in the glue board, everyone agrees that the bird is permitted, and the disagreement applies only when both wings were stuck in the board. According to the second version, if both wings are stuck, everyone agrees that the bird is forbidden, and the disagreement applies only when one wing is stuck.

3. An animal has 22 ribs. If six are broken on one side and six on the other, or eleven on one side and one on the other, the animal is a Tereifah.

4. If six ribs -- the majority of ribs of one side -- are uprooted from the spine, even though they are not all broken on the same side, the animal is a Tereifah. According to Rebbi Yochanan, the animal is a Tereifah only if the majority of both sides -- at least twelve ribs -- are uprooted from the spine.

5. However, if the vertebra is not broken, the animal is a Tereifah only if most of the ribs are broken.

6. Shmuel maintains that the same disagreement applies to the spinal column of an animal with regard to the laws of Tereifah; according to Beis Hilel, if it is missing one vertebra, it is a Tereifah.

7. It is a Safek whether Shmuel is referring to the majority of the height of the skull or to the majority of the circumference.

8. It is a Safek whether Shmuel means that the majority of the flesh was torn, or the majority of the flesh was removed.

9. When a predator claws its prey, it injects poison into the victim, thereby rendering it a Tereifah even if it did not puncture any of the organs. According to Rebbi Ila'i, Rebbi Yehudah is explaining the view of the Chachamim and is not arguing,; everyone agrees that a large animal is not rendered a Tereifah unless it is clawed by lion.

10. Although Rav maintains that nothing smaller than a wolf causes an animal to become a Tereifah as a result of clawing, according to Rav Chisda a very small animal like a kid or a lamb becomes a Tereifah from the clawing of a cat or marten even though it is smaller than a wolf.

11. According to the first version of the Gemara, Rav Chisda agrees with Beribi that if no effort is being made to save the kid or lamb, it is not rendered a Tereifah, because the cat is not angry and does not claw as viciously. According to the second version of the Gemara, Rav Chisda maintains that the Rabanan argue with Beribi and say that the kid or lamb is rendered a Tereifah even if no effort is being made to save it.
