SUMMARY

1. Olive oil produced from unripe olives may not be used for Menachos. There is a disagreement about whether it is valid b'Di'eved.

2. If olives were pickled, cooked, or soaked in water, the olive oil which is produced from them is Pasul for Menachos.

3. If one is Makdish bad smelling olive oil for a Minchah, or olive oil that was produced from olives which were pickled, cooked, or soaked in water, there is a doubt about whether he is Chayav Malkus.

4. Olives are harvested from the tree in three stages. First, the olives on top of the tree are harvested, and then the olives next to the roofs are harvested. Finally, the olives under the roofs are harvested.

5. The olives which are harvested at each stage produce three varieties of olive oil. They naturally emit olive oil without pressing. When they are pressed, they produce more olive oil. When they are ground and pressed again, they produce more olive oil.

6. There are three disagreements about the process of making the olive oil for the Beis ha'Mikdash: whether the olives are cut for the extraction of the first oil or whether they are ground; whether the olives are placed inside the baskets or along the outside wall of the baskets; and whether the olives are pressed with a beam or with stones.

7. The first oil that is extracted from the first batch of olives is the most superior oil. The oil which is extracted form the third batch of olives is the most inferior oil.

8. The second oil extracted from the first batch of olives is equal to the first oil extracted from the second batch, but only for Menachos. For the Menorah, only the first oil extracted from the olives is valid.

9. The light of the Menorah is for Yisrael and not for Hashem, because Hashem does not need the light. For this reason the Menorah was placed on the opposite side of the Heichal from the Shulchan.

10. A half of a Log of oil was placed in all of the Neros of the Menorah, and the Ner Ma'aravi was lit first and was never extinguished.

11. The wine for Nesachim may not be brought from grapes which grew in a field that needs to be fertilized or watered, or from a vineyard where the area between the trees was planted. However, b'Di'eved it is valid.

A BIT MORE

1. According to Rebbi Chiya, it is considered sap, not oil, and it is Pasul. Rebbi Shimon b'Rebbi disagrees.

2. Olive oil which is extracted from sediment, and bad smelling olive oil, are also Pasul for Menachos.

3. One who is Makdish an animal which is a Ba'al Mum for the Mizbe'ach transgresses five Lavim. The doubt is whether this also applies to olive oil, or whether the concept of a Ba'al Mum applies only to animals.

4. The olives ripen in three stages. The olives on the top of the trees ripen first, followed by the olives next to the roofs. The olives underneath the roofs do not ripen completely because the roofs block them from the sun.

5. The olive oil produced without pressing is regarded as Shemen Zayis Zach and is valid for the Menorah. The olive oil produced after the olives are pressed is valid for Menachos, but not for the Menorah.

6. After the first batch of olives is harvested, they are ground (according to the Rabanan) or cut (according to Rebbi Yehudah), and then they are placed inside or around the outside of baskets and the oil is extracted into the baskets. The second batch of olives is harvested and they are pressed with a beam (according to the Rabanan) or stones (according to Rebbi Yehudah).

7. A Korban should be brought from the highest quality of animal, and, similarly, the oil used for Menachos should be of the highest quality. Therefore, if a person has a choice, he should use the highest quality oil for his Minchah.

8. The third oil extracted from the first batch of olives is equal to the second oil extracted from the second batch and the first oil extracted from the third batch, with regard to Menachos. The third oil extracted from the second batch is equal to the second oil extracted from the third batch, with regard to Menachos.

9. If the light was for Hashem, then the Menorah would have been placed next to the Shulchan. Moreover, the windows of the Heichal were narrow on the inside and wide on the outside in order to allow the light of the Heichal to shine outside, as it was not necessary for the light from the outside to shine into the Heichal.

10. The Kohen prepares all of the Neros in the morning, with the exception of the Ner Ma'aravi which remains lit the entire day. In the evening, all of the other Neros are lit from the Ner Ma'aravi.

11. If the area between the vines are planted, it weakens the vines, and consequently the wine which is produced from the grapes is inferior.
