SUMMARY

1. A Mezuzah must be placed in the doorway within the Tefach closest to the public domain.
 
2. If a Mezuzah is written in two columns, it is Pasul.
 
3. If a house is divided in half with an entranceway connecting the two halves, the side of the door with the hinges is considered the inside of the house, and the other side is considered the outside.
 
4. The doorpost must be attached to the house before the Mezuzah is affixed to it.
 
5. If the Mezuzah is driven into the doorpost in the manner of a bolt, it is Pasul.
 
6. A Mezuzah should be placed in the entranceway used most frequently.
 
7. Shmuel says that a Mezuzah should be placed in the upper third of the entranceway. Rav Huna says that it may be placed anywhere in the entranceway, except for the top and bottom Tefach.
 
8. A Mezuzah may not be placed a Tefach deep in the doorpost.
 
9. If one has a doorpost made from reeds, he should cut out a space in the reed and place the Mezuzah in the space, but only after the entranceway has been erected.
 
10. If an entranceway is incomplete and lacks a lintel according to one opinion, or a doorpost according to another opinion, it does not require a Mezuzah.
 
11. A gatehouse, portico, and balcony are obligated to have a Mezuzah.
 
12. A gatehouse which is open to the house and to the courtyard requires two Mezuzos.
 
13. If the gate of a house opens to the house and to the garden, there is a disagreement about whether it requires one Mezuzah, two Mezuzos, or none at all.

A BIT MORE

1. The Mezuzah must be placed close to the public domain so that when a person enters the house, he sees the Mezuzah immediately. Alternatively, it must be placed there because the Mezuzah provides protection for the entire house.
 
2. If a Mezuzah is written in two columns with a margin between them, it is fit to be placed on both doorposts, one half on one doorpost and the other half on the other doorpost, and therefore it is Pasul.
 
3. The Mezuzah must be on the right side when one enters the side of the house with the hinges.
 
4. The Mezuzah must be affixed to the doorpost when the obligation to fulfill the Mitzvah of Mezuzah is in force. The Mitzvah of Mezuzah applies only when the doorposts are attached.
 
5. Rashi says that the Mezuzah must be placed on the doorpost in a vertical position. Rabeinu Tam says that the Mezuzah must be placed in a horizontal position. The prevalent Minhag is to place the Mezuzah on an angle in order to fulfill both opinions.
 
6. If there are two entrances to a room, the Mezuzah should be placed in the entrance used more frequently.
 
7. According to Shmuel, the Mezuzah should be placed close to the top of the doorframe, and not lower than one third from the top.
 
8. If one hollows out a space in the doorpost and places a Mezuzah in the space, it is Pasul if the space is more than one Tefach deep.
 
9. However, one may not cut out a space and place the Mezuzah there before he erects the doorposts.
 
10. There is a disagreement between Rav Rechumi and Aba Yosi about whether the definition of an incomplete entrance way is that it lacks a lintel or that it lacks doorposts.
 
11. A portico with four walls is obligated to have a Mezuzah, even if the walls do not reach the ceiling, and even if the walls consist of windows which go all the way around the portico. However, a portico with only three walls is exempt from a Mezuzah, even if it has pillars in the open area where the fourth wall would have been, because the pillars are there only in order to support the ceiling.
 
12. One Mezuzah should be placed at the entrance to the house, and another Mezuzah at the entrance to the courtyard.
 
13. According to Rav and Shmuel, everyone agrees that the gatehouse requires a Mezuzah at the entrance of the house; the disagreement between Rebbi Yosi and the Rabanan is about whether it requires a Mezuzah at the entrance to the garden. According to Rabah and Rav Yosef, everyone agrees that it does not require a Mezuzah at the entrance to the garden; the disagreement between Rebbi Yosi and the Rabanan is about whether it requires a Mezuzah at the entrance to the house.
