SUMMARY

If a wife who rebels grabs the clothing of her dowry from her husband, she may keep it. (1)

If a wife rebels against her husband, we delay giving her a Get for 12 months in order to give her a chance to change her mind. (2)

If a Chasan or Yavam refuses to marry his Arusah or Shomeres Yavam, he is not treated as a Mored because a woman is not obligated in Peru u'Revu.

If an Arusah or Shomeres Yavam claims that she wishes to get married because she wants a child who will care for her in her old age, the Chasan is treated as a Mored if he delays the marriage.

The Mitzvah of Yibum takes precedence over the Mitzvah of Chalitzah when the Yibum is done solely for the sake of the Mitzvah.

Nowadays, no one has proper intent to perform Yibum for the sake of the Mitzvah, and thus the Mitzvah of Chalitzah has precedence over the Mitzvah of Yibum. (3)

When the husband rebels against the wife, we add one and a half Me'ah to the Kesuvah for every weekday, according to Rebbi Yehudah.

When the wife rebels against the husband, we subtract a Trafik for every day of the week including Shabbos, according to Rebbi Yehudah.

When we subtract from the Kesuvah, we may subtract even on Shabbos, because it does not appear like profiting on Shabbos.

When we add to the Kesuvah, we do not add on Shabbos because it appears like profiting on Shabbos.

If a husband is providing for his wife by means of a third party, he must provide wheat, barley, legumes, oil, figs and dates. (4)

The husband must also provide for his wife bedding, appropriate clothing, footwear and he must give her a Me'ah Kesef for her needs. (5)

If the wife is nursing, her obligation for handiwork is reduced, and she receives extra food.

A wealthy husband is obligated to provide for his wife in a more generous fashion.

Rebbi Meir: The two Se'udos that are needed for an Eruv Techumin are comprised of the amount of bread that one eats during the week.

Rebbi Yehudah: The two Se'udos that are needed for an Eruv Techumin are comprised of the amount of bread that one eats on Shabbos. (6)

Rebbi Chidka: A person must eat four Se'udos every Shabbos.

A BIT MORE

1. Rava was in doubt about whether a wife who rebels loses the clothing that she brought into the marriage in her dowry. Since the Safek was not resolved, if she seizes the clothing she may keep it, but it is not given to her.

2. During those 12 months she does not receive food from her husband.

3. Therefore, nowadays if the Yavam wants to do Yibum and the Shomeres Yavam wants to do Chalitzah, she is not regarded as a Moredes. However, if the Yavam wants to do Chalitzah and the Shomeres Yavam wants to do Yibum, she is regarded as a Moredes.

4. If any of these forms of produce are not available, he must provide an alternative produce.

5. If he does not give her a Me'ah Kesef, she may keep her surplus handiwork.

6. Both Rebbi and Rebbi Yehudah intend to be lenient. According to Rebbi Meir, a person eats more bread on Shabbos because he eats a much larger meal. According to Rebbi Yehudah, a person eats more bread during the week because on Shabbos he has a lot of other delicacies to eat other than bread.

BRIEF INSIGHT

A WOMAN IS NOT OBLIGATED IN PERU U'REVU

The Gemara says that if a Chasan rebels against his Arusah, he is not regarded as a Mored because she anyway is not obligated in Peru u'Revu. The Tosfos ha'Rosh asks that the Mishnah states that when a husband rebels against his wife, three Dinarim are added to her Kesuvah every week. The Tosfos ha'Rosh answers that the Mishnah is referring to a husband who rebels after they are married, when the obligations of She'er, Kesus, and Onah apply. The Gemara is referring to a husband who rebels during the Eirusin.

QUICK HALACHAH

If an Arusah refuses to get married based on the claim that she cannot tolerate her Chasan, the father is not obligated to pay the dowry that he promised. (Shulchan Aruch EH 77:5)

The reason is that the father promised to give the dowry only on condition that they get married, and his daughter is not in his domain to force her to marry. (Beis Shmuel)
