BERACHOS 19 - Dedicated l'Iluy Nishmas Esther Chaya Rayzel (Friedman) bas Gershon Eliezer (Yahrzeit: 30 Av, Yom Kevurah: 1 Elul) by her daughter and son-in-law, Jeri and Eli Turkel of Raanana, Israel. Esther Friedman was a woman of valor who was devoted to her family and gave of herself unstintingly, inspiring all those around her.

SUMMARY

1. Whoever speaks badly about a Torah scholar after his death will end up in Gehinom.

2. Even Torah scholars who did not follow the majority opinion were put in forms of excommunication.

3. A person should not say that a bad thing will happen. This is considered "opening one's mouth to Satan."

4. If someone realizes that he is wearing Kil'ayim when he is in the market, he must remove it immediately.

5. Concern for human dignity overrides Rabbinic ordinances.

A BIT MORE

1. If one sees a Torah scholar sin, he should assume that he repented immediately afterwards.

2. The Gemara relates incidents wherein these sages died without repenting, and the Rabanan ordered that stones be thrown on their coffins.

3. This is derived from Yeshayah's words that describe Bnei Yisrael as "almost like Sedom." Afterwards, he was told that they were exactly like Sedom.

4. One is not allowed to wear the garment with Kil'ayim for even one second. Therefore, he must remove it despite the fact that this will cause him great embarrassment.

5. The Torah also teaches that concern for human dignity overrides concern for other people's money in certain situations. One exemption stated by the Torah is that a dignified person is exempt from returning a lost object if it is beneath his honor to deal with such an object.
