THE SPELLING OF THE MISHNAH (Yerushalmi Perek 5 Halachah 1 Daf 30b)

(a)

(Mishnah) Question: How are we Me'aber a city (append outskirts before measuring its Techum)?

(b)

Answer: [If a line of houses is a wall of the city,] and houses are recessed and houses jut out [the latter extend the city]. If towers are recessed and towers jut out [the latter extend the city].

1.

The following [extend it] if they have a place of Dirah - Gedudiyos (broken remnants of ruined houses) 10 Tefachim tall, a bridge, and a Nefesh (building over a grave).

(c)

[We extend the measure in each of the four directions to be even with the furthest point,] to make it like a rectangular board. The corners are included.

(d)

(Gemara): If a house is recessed, we extend [the line that marks the extent of the city] to be even with [those that jut out from] the city. If a tower juts out, we extend [the line] be even with it [and similarly for a house that juts out and a tower that is recessed].

(e)

Rav said [that the text of our Mishnah] is Me'abrim (spelled with an Aleph). Shmuel said [that it is spelled] with an Ayin.

1.

The one who says with an Aleph, [when a "limb'' (protrusion) sticks out, e.g. in the southeast,] we add a limb [corresponding to it in the northeast, and extend the city until the line between them. We similarly add a limb in the southwest.]

2.

The one who says with an Ayin, the Mishnah refers to the additions to the city like a Me'uberes (pregnant woman).

(f)

(Mishnah): We do not bless on the Ner (in Havdalah) until Ye'oso (one benefits) from its light.

(g)

Rav said Ye'oso (with an Aleph). Shmuel said with an Ayin.

1.

The one who says with an Aleph, he learns from "Ach b'Zos Ne'os Lachem.'' The one who says with an Ayin, he learns from "La'da'as La'us Es Ya'ef Davar.''

(h)

(Mishnah): Before Eideihen (Nochri festivals)... Rav said with an Ayin. Shmuel said with an Aleph.

1.

The one who says with an Aleph, he learns from "Ki Karov Yom Eidam.'' The one who says with an Ayin, he learns from "v'Eideihem Hemah...''

(i)

Question: How does Shmuel explain [the verse that is] the reason for Rav?

(j)

Answer: Eideihem Hemah (they are witnesses) - in the future, they will shame those who served them, on the day of judgment.

2)

KABALAS PNEI RABO

(a)

(R. Yochanan citing R. Hoshayah): We add a limb to [the city].

1.

[R. Hoshayah] looked [gleefully] at R. Yochanan [when he said this in the name of R. Hoshayah].

2.

R. Yochanan: Why do you look at me [like this]? One who needs [to learn from] you, this gladdens you? I did not need [to learn this from] you - [others] taught more [about this] than you! (R. Yochanan said the latter about a teaching he cited from R. Hoshayah in Sanhedrin. The Gemara copied it here, even though it does not apply here. We explained this like PNEI MOSHE.)

3.

For 13 years [R. Yochanan] came in front of his Rebbi (R. Hoshayah, even though he had grown in Torah and) he did not need him [any more].

(b)

(R. Shmuel citing R. Ze'ira): Not only this - rather, he used to be Mekabel Panav of (come to see) his Rebbi [every day], for one who is Mekabel Panav of his Rebbi is like one who Mekabel Pnei ha'Shechinah!

(c)

(R. Berachiyah citing R. Yirmeyah citing R. Chiya bar Ba): It says "u'Moshe Yikach Es ha'Ohel...'' - how far was he [from Machaneh Yisrael]? R. Yitzchak said, he was a Mil;

1.

It does not say 'v'Hayah Kol Mevakesh Moshe', rather, "v'Hayah Kol Mevakesh Hashem'' - this shows that everyone who is Mekabel Panav of his Rebbi is like one who Mekabel Pnei ha'Shechinah.

(d)

(R. Chelbo citing R. Chunah citing Rav) Question: It says "va'Yomer Eliyahu ha'Tishbi... [Hash-m... Asher Amadti Lefanav]'' - was not Eliyahu new to prophecy?!

(e)

Answer: Rather, this teaches that all the times he stood in front of Achiyah ha'Shiloni, his Rebbi, it is as if he stood in front of the Shechinah.

(f)

(R. Chelbo citing Ilan of Beis Shilo): Even if Eliyahu required water in front of him, Elisha would put on his hands. What is the source? It does not say 'Poh Elisha ben Shafat Asher Lamad Torah', rather, "Asher Yatzak Mayim Al Yedei Eliyahu'' (because service is greater than learning. We explained this like PNEI MOSHE.)

(g)

Question: It is written "veha'Na'ar Shmuel Meshares Es Hash-m Lifnei Eli'' - he served only Eli!

(h)

Answer: This teaches that anyone who serves in front of his Rebbi, it is as if he serves in front of the Shechinah.

(i)

(R. Yishmael) Question: "Va'Yavo Aharon v'Chol Ziknei Yisrael Le'echol Lechem Im Chosen Moshe Lifnei ha'Elokim'' - did they eat in front of Hash-m?!

(j)

Answer: This shows that everyone who is Mekabel Panav of his colleague is like one who Mekabel Pnei ha'Shechinah.
