DAF DISCUSSIONS - YOMA 22

Zecharia Dor-Shav asks:

Perhaps we should begin by asking why the race ended 4 amot before the top. Why not race until the top? Perhaps the gemara is hinting to the fact that 4 amot from the top of the mizbeach is within reaching distance of the border between heaven and earth

למטה מעשרה)to teach that all of man's strivings are appropriate for this world only and not for the heavenly world. Thus the intention is to conclude that the race ends when one is in reach of heaven.

The question still remains with regard to the "תיקו" regarding whether or not the יסוד and/or the סובב are included in the starting point. Perhaps the question here is whether or not when striving to be within reach of heaven, we must begin with our foundation, i.e., אדם יסודו מעפרת, and whether or not the רקיע which is circling

(סובב) , i.e., the natural world (טבע) is also part of our starting point.
