DAF DISCUSSIONS - YOMA 19

Avrohom asked:

In explaining the gemara that outside of Jerusalem people used to stay up all night on Yom Kippur as a zecher lamikdash but they sinned, Rashi says that men and women used to play together and through that they came to sin. Isn't the actual playing of men and women together (whatever Rashi means by playing) a sin in and of itself? Why does Rashi need to say that the playing of men and women "brought" them to a sin?

Avrohom , Israel

The Kollel replies:

Dear Avrohom,

The Gemara often uses "Chet' and "Aveirah" as a code word for major sin, meaning illicit relations. Of course playing is forbidden, but it brings to "the" Aveirah.

All the best,
