DAF DISCUSSIONS - CHULIN 108

S. Katz asked:

1 - If you have a meat stew, with one of the pieces on top is half in and half out. And a drop of milk falls directly onto that piece of meat

only. Is it preferable to mix the stew immediately ( before the milk gets absorbed into that piece of meat ) or to remove that piece of meat

with the milk with a spoon, and throw it into the garbage ( and then what about the spoon - does it have to be Kashered ) ? ( The case being, where the piece of meat is not 60 x the drop of milk, and the stew is not 60 x the piece of meat ) Yoreh Deah Siman 92,2

2 - Heart of an animal is Kosher ( Chulin 109A). I had asked Rav Stein, of Rechovot, why Askenazim don't eat it, and he told me because it causes Forgetfulness " Shechicha " ( Horiot 13B ). It would therefore be important for an Ashkenazi to be careful, if eating in a Sefardi

Resturant not to order the Murav Yerushalmi - which supposedly is a mixture of meat that includes the Heart .

My question is we do find olives with Askenazi Hechsherim on them,( and I imagine they are not pouring olive oil on the olives in the can ) ?? Or can you say , that when the Gemaruh says that olives cause Forgetfulness. it is referring to the raw unpickeled kind, since they

have not been made fit for eating. And the olives in the can are fine, even without pouring on them alive oil ? ( There are many proofs for

this from the gemaruh in Menachot 53B )

If the Rav answers me with " Minhag ", at what point does Minhag become strong enough to make something Assur ?

Thank You,

Shmuel Katz

The Kollel replies:

1. The case you mentioned, when the piece is half in and half out of the stew, is the subject of the Machlokes between Rashi and Rabeinu Tam. According to Rabeinu Tam there is no need to mix the piece in, for it is already considered mixed with the rest. Most Rishonim follow this view, and seemingly so does the Shach. According to Rashi, which is the Halachah according to the Taz, it seems that it l'Chatchilah one should mix it in if it can be done immediately. If it is taken out, the spoon will become prohibited only if it was taken out after the milk became absorbed in the meat.

2. See Sefer Shemiras ha'Guf veha'Nefesh who quotes views that say that only dried olives are a problem. Also, there are views that say that the problem applies only to one who is "Ragil."

With regard to olives, the gematria of olive is 417, and so is the name of Hashem KAIL (31) ELOKIM (86) and Metzapetz 300, (Hashem's name where aleph is tav etc). If one hays in mind the three gematrias the Ben Ish Chai says he will not come to any harm. (Ateres Tifferes)
