DAF DISCUSSIONS - AVODAH ZARAH 12

SHMUEL GOTTESMAN asked:

DOES RASHI MEAN THAT THE MONEY ITSELF WAS USED AS AN OFFERING OR MAYBE RASHI MEANS THAT THE ANIMAL WAS USED AS AN OFFERING AND THE THIS MONEY IS FORBIDDEN BECAUSE THIS IS THE MONEY THAT THE SELLER AQUIRED THROUGH HIS SELLING THE ANIMAL?

SHMUEL GOTTESMAN, USA

The Kollel replies:

Tosfos (DH d'Kavasah) quotes Rashi as having explained that the money was used to serve the Avodah Zarah. (Tosfos was Gores the word "Hayu" instead of the word "ha'Yom" in Rashi, see Rashash on Rashi).

Tosfos offers an alternative Pshat, that the money was gained by the non-Jew through the sale of his Avodah Zarah.
