DAF DISCUSSIONS - BAVA BASRA 53

MICHAEL PLASKOW asked:

CAN A GER MAKE A WILL? FOR EXAMPLE, HE WANTS TO SHOW HIS APPRECIATION TO A JEW WHO BEFRIENDED HIM DURING HIS LIFETIME.

MICHAEL PLASKOW, Netanya, Israel

The Kollel replies:

The Shulchan Aruch, in YD 283:1, states that a ger can inherit his father. From this we learn that just as a ger can inherit, he can also give to others from his estate as any other Jew.

Therefore, a ger can set up a will. If he chooses to give part of his inheritance to a Jew who befriended him during his lifetime, he is permitted to do so.
