DAF DISCUSSIONS - SHABBOS 7

David Garber asked:

The Gemara there speaking about the following situation: We have a house that has only 9 Tephachim height, and the person digs in the floor another Tephach in order to have 10 Tephachim height. Then, at the place of digging, this is Reshut Hayachid, and the other areas of the house are Chorei Reshut Hayachid, which are also Reshut Hayachid.

Now, Rashi there emphasizes that the digging is in the middle of the house (he says "Be'emtzai'to"!).

The question is why Rashi requests that this digging will be in the middle of the house ? What is the difference if this digging is in the middle of the house or in the side of the house - in both cases the digging is Reshut Hayachid and the other areas are Chorei Reshut Hayachid?

Thank you and Yishar Koach,

David Garber.

The Kollel replies:

True, Rashi could have explained the way that you suggest. But he opted to emphasize the bigger Chidush, that even in the middle of the house, when the trench is not adjacent to any walls (which would make the trench more logically part of the entire house), the trench serves to make the entire house a Reshus ha'Yachid.

Also, it could be that Rashi's intention is to preclude one from explaining that it is necessary to dig from wall to wall throughout the entire house in order to make it considered like Reshus ha'Yachid.
