See Rashbam.

See Sifsei Chachamim.

How did they use the pole to transport the Menorah?

1.

Ibn Ezra: The pole was used to suspend the Tachash-skin cover with the Menorah and its administering vessels and to carry it when they traveled, since, unlike the other holy vessels, the Menorah did not have staves with which to transport it.

2.

Hadar Zekenim: The Menorah was carried on top of the pole. It did not hang from it, so that it should not drag on the ground. 1

Hadar Zekenim: Since the Menorah was eighteen Tefachim tall - the average height of a person - eiher up to his head or up to his shoulder (Tosfos Bava Basra 100b cites both opinions). Either way, it is prone to drag. (PF)
