Rashi: It means in the gateway known as Sha'ar Nikanor (between the Ezras Nashim and the Ezras Yisrael), 1 his back to the east, facing westward (Sifra).

Which had the Kedushah of Machaneh Leviyah. The Mitaher was not allowed in the Azarah (the Machaneh Shechinah), - since he had not yet brought his Korbanos. However, he was permitted to stick his ear, thumb and big toe into the Azarah for the Kohen to place the blood of his Asham and the oil on them, without them leaving the Azarah (See Rashi, Pesachim, 92a).
