From where was Moshe expected to carve a second set of sapphire Luchos?

1.

Rashi: Hashem showed him a sapphire-mine in his tent. 1

1

Oznayim la'Torah: In order to replace the ones he had broken.

2)

Why did Hashem add the word "P'sol l'cha"?

1.

Rashi #1: He instructed him to carve out the Luchos ("P'sol") adding the word "l'cha", a hint that the Pesoles (the shavings) belonged to him. 1

2.

Rashi #2: 'You broke the first ones', Hashem said to him, 'Go and carve out new ones!' 2

1

Rashi: And that is what made him extremely wealthy - due to the principle 'Ein ha'Shechinah Shoreh Ela al Chacham, Gibor, Ashir ve'Anav

3)

Seeing as Hashem had carved the first Luchos, why did He instruct Moshe to carve the second ones?

1.

Rashi: 'You broke the Luchos', Hashem said to him. 'You go ahead and replace them!' 1

2.

Seforno (in Pasuk 27): Refer to 34:27:1:4.

1

This can be compared to a king who went overseas, leaving his betrothed with his maid-servants. Due to the misbehavior of the maidservants, people began to slander his betrothed. Meanwhile, the king's close friend tore up the Kesubah so that, should the king wish to have her killed, he would be able to point out that she was not yet his wife. When, upon the king's return, he discovered that it was not his betrothed who had committed adultery, but the maidservants, he turned to his friend and declared 'You tore up her Kesubah! You can acquire paper and I will write her another one.' The King is Hakadosh-Baruch-Hu, the maidservants, the Eirev Rav, the close friend, Moshe and the betrothed, Yisrael. That is why Hashem ordered Moshe "P'sol l'cha!'

4)

Why did Hashem add the words "Asher Shibarta", which are seemingly superfluous?

1.

Rashi #1: Refer to 34:1:3:1*.

2.

Shabbos, 87a: To teach us that Hashem agreed with Moshe's decision 1 to break the Luchos.

3.

Menachos, 99b: And we learn from here that sometimes, the nullification of the Torah is necessary in order to maintain it. 2

1

"Asher Shibarta" has connotaqtions of 'Yeyasher Kochacha she'Shibarta' - ('Thank you for breaking them!') or of 'Ishur' - a Lashon of praise (Rashi in Shabbos, Ibid.)

2

See Torah Temimah, note 3.

5)

When did Hashem tell Moshe to carve out the second Luchos?

1.

Rashi (in Eikev): On the twenty-ninth of Av, the same day that Moshe descended Har Sinai the second time, Hashem pardoned Yisrael and instructed him to carve out the second Luchos. 1

1

Refer also to 33:17:1:2*.

6)

The Pesukim here and in Eikev, Devarim 10:2-4 imply that Hashem will write on the second Luchos, whereas Pasuk 28 implies that Moshe wrote them, like Hashem commanded him (in Pasuk 27)?

1.

Refer to 34:28:1 & 2 and notes.
