What are the connotations of the word ?Va?ira??

1.

Rashi: It means ? ? and I was ashamed?.

2.

Seforno, Targum Onkelos and Targum Yonasan: It means ? ? and I was afraid. 1

1

Seforno: A natural tendency following sin - like we find following the Eigel - ?Vayir?u mi?Geshes eilav.? See Ki Sisa Sh?mos, 43:3. Targum Yonasan - when translating ?Va?echavei? does however - add ?and I hid out of shame?.

2)

Why was Adam ashamed (or afraid)?

1.

Rashi (in Pasuk 11): Because he now realized that he was naked. 1

2: Targum Yonasan: Because he was naked and because he had sinned.

1

Moshav Zekenim (in Pasuk 7): They were not naked - since they had sewn fig-leaves to cover themselves! Perhaps only their Ervah was covered. Alternatively, they had removed them in order to have relations. Refer also to 3:10:2:1.

3)

Having just informed us that they made themselves girdles, how could Adam say ?Ki Eirom Anochi??

1.

Oznayim la?Torah: It is one thing to cover one?s private parts with a girdle so aas not to walk around in front of all the animals entirely naked, but quite another to stand before Hashem with most of the body uncovered 1 - which also falls under the category of ?Eirom?. 2

1

Oznayim la?Torah: As the Navi writes in Amos, 4:12 ?Hikon Likras Elokecha Yisrael?.

2

Refer also to Oznayim la?Torah in Pasuk 21.
