PAST CYCLE DEDICATION

BERACHOS 46 - Dedicated by Rav Shalom Kelman in honor of Hagaon Rav Yehudah Copperman, author of the annotated edition of the Meshech Chochmah, and most recently "Mavo l'Limud Torah."

1)

THE BRACHOS OF BIRKAS HA'MAZON (Yerushalmi Perek 7 Halachah 1 Daf 51b)

(a)

If three ate together, and one of them wanted to go away - from Beis Rav, they said that [the Mevarech] blesses the first Brachah, and then [this one] may go.

(b)

Question: What is the first Brachah?

(c)

Answer #1 (Beis Rav): It is Birkas ha'Zimun.

(d)

Answer #2 (Rav Ze'ira citing Rav Yirmeyah): It is ha'Zan Es ha'Kol.

(e)

Support: [Also] R. Chelbo bar Chanan citing Rav said that it is ha'Zan Es ha'Kol.

(f)

Question (Rav Sheshes - Beraisa): Two or three are obligated in Birkas ha'Mazon (even if no one knows all of it, each says the Brachah that he knows and is Motzi the others);

1.

Inference: It does not say four. If you will say that Birkas ha'Zimun is the first, it should teach four (everyone knows one Brachah)!

(g)

Answer: A Beraisa was found that says four.

(h)

Question: If you will say that the first Brachah is ha'Zan Es ha'Kol, this is difficult! (How can Birkas ha'Mazon be divided among four?)

1.

Suggestion: The fourth Brachah is ha'Tov veha'Metiv.

2.

Rejection: You cannot answer so, for Rav Huna taught that after those killed in Beitar were able to be buried, ha'Tov veha'Metiv was established. Ha'Tov - that the bodies did not decay [even though it was many year after they were killed]. Veha'Metiv - that they were able to be buried. (Since it is mid'Rabanan, it would not be included with Brachos mid'Oraisa.)

(i)

Answer (and defense of suggestion - R. Chunah): The Beraisa is like R. Yishmael;

1.

(R. Yishmael): Ha'Tov veha'Metiv is mid'Oraisa - "v'Achalta v'Savata u'Verachta" is [a hint to] Birkas ha'Zimun. "Es Hash-m Elokecha" is ha'Zan Es ha'Kol. "Al ha'Aretz" is Birkas ha'Aretz. "Ha'Tovah" is Boneh Yerushalayim - "ha'Har ha'Tov ha'Zeh veha'Levanon." "Asher Nasan Lach" is ha'Tov veha'Metiv.

(j)

It is written that one must bless before Torah; a Brachah afterwards is not written. What is written beforehand? "Ki Shem Hash-m Ekra Havu Godel lEi'lokeinu';

(k)

It is written that one must bless after food; a Brachah beforehand is not written. What is written afterwards? "V'Achalta v'Savata u'Verachta."

(l)

Question: What is the source to apply to what is said about this (we bless before Torah) to this (we must bless before food), and to apply to what is said about this (we bless after food) to this (we must bless after Torah)?

(m)

Answer #1 (R. Shmuel bar Nachmani citing R. Yonason): We learn from a Gezeirah Shavah "Shem-Shem (i.e. Hash-m-Hash-m)." Just like Hash-m said regarding Torah, we bless before it, also Hash-m said about food, we bless before it. And just like Hash-m said regarding food, we bless after it, also Hash-m said about Torah [we bless after it].

(n)

Question: This is like R. Akiva [who learns from a Gezeirah Shavah even if it is free only on one side]. According to R. Yishmael [how can we answer]?

(o)

Answer (R. Yochanan citing R. Yishmael): We learn from a Kal v'Chomer. Food does not require a Brachah before it, yet it requires a Brachah after it. Torah, which requires a Brachah before it, all the more so it requires a Brachah after it!

(p)

Question: This answers for Torah. What is the source for food?

(q)

Answer #1: Torah does not require a Brachah after it, yet it requires a Brachah before it. Food, which requires a Brachah after it, all the more so it requires a Brachah before it!

(r)

Answer #2: R. Yitzchak and R. Nasan [gave other answers to this]. R. Yitzchak says, "Ki Hu Yevarech ha'Zevach Acharei Chen Yochlu ha'Keru'im." (They will not eat until Shmuel will make a Berachah Rishonah.)

(s)

Answer #3 (R. Nasan): "Va'Avadtem Es Hash-m Elokeichem u'Verach Es Lachmecha v'Es Meimecha" - when is it called your bread and your water? Before you ate it (that is when you bless. After you ate it, it is not bread - OHR YAKOV.)

(t)

Answer #4 (Rebbi): If after one ate and he is satiated, he must bless, at a time when he is hungry to eat, all the more so!

(u)

Question: This answers for food. What is the source for Torah? (Since Rebbi holds that a Kal v'Chomer teaches that one must bless also before food, he cannot learn the above Kal v'Chomer from food to Torah.)

(v)

Answer: Food, which [gives] only temporary life (in this world), requires a Brachah and after it. Torah, which requires a Brachah before it, all the more so it requires a Brachah after it!

(w)

Question (R. Ze'ira): The three Aliyos (on Monday, Thursday and Shabbos Minchah) - how do you consider them? Are they like three who ate together, or like three who ate, each by himself? (Since we learn Birkas ha'Torah from Birkas ha'Mazon, it should be similar.)

1.

If you consider them like three who ate together - the first blesses beforehand, the last blesses at the end, and the middle one does not bless at all;

2.

If you consider them like three who ate, each by himself, even the middle one blesses before and after.

(x)

Answer (R. Shmuel bar Avdima): We learned Birkas ha'Torah from Birkas ha'Mazon only for a Rabim. (This shows that we consider them like three who ate together.)

(y)

Question: If [we learn only] for a Rabim, if so [one who learns] by himself should not bless!

(z)

Answer (Aba Mari, the brother of R. Yosi): They made [Talmud Torah] like other Torah Mitzvos. Just like all other Mitzvos require a Brachah [mid'Rabanan], also this requires a Brachah. (We explained this like CHAREDIM.)
