1)

IMMERSING IN A MIKVEH ON YOM TOV (Yerushalmi Halachah 2 Daf 10b)

(a)

(Mishneh): If Yom Tov occurs on a Sunday - Beis Shamai say that he must immerse everything (both utensils and himself) before Yom Tov. Beis Hillel say that utensils must be immersed before Yom Tov, but a person may immerse on Yom Tov.

(b)

(Gemara): The Mishnah is referring to large utensils but for small utensils, one may immerse them in a deceptive manor.

(c)

Beraisa (R. Hoshiya): A person may fill a Tameh utensil from the well and immerse it in a deceptive manor.

(d)

Beraisa: If his bucket fell into the well, he may immerse it in a deceptive manor.

(e)

There were two Amoraim who explained the dispute between Beis Shamai and Beis Hillel differently - one said that it refers to utensils that became Tameh from an Av HaTumah; the other one said that the utensils became Tameh from a Vlad HaTumah.

(f)

Question (the one who said Vlad to the one who said Av): Even on a weekday, it should require waiting until sunset? (Why would it be permitted to immerse it in a deceptive manor - it will anyway be unusable until after Yom Tov?)

(g)

Answer: He wishes to use them to eat Chulin (non-consecrated foods) in Taharah.

(h)

All those who are obligated to immerse, may immerse on Tisha B'Av and Yom Kippur in the regular way.

(i)

R. Chanina S'gan HaKohanim disagrees: It is worth delaying one immersion in order to mourn the destruction of the Temple of Hash-m (by refraining from immersing on Tisha B'Av).

(j)

R. Levi expounded like this statement of R. Chanina S''HK.

(k)

According to Beis Hillel, a person may immerse himself on Yom Tov - just as a person may immerse himself in water on Shabbos (as it appears as if he is immersing to cool himself down).

2)

PURIFYING WATER ON YOM TOV (Yerushalmi Halachah 3 Daf 10b)

(a)

(Mishnah): Both agree that one may 'kiss' - i.e. purify drinking water that became Tameh by filling a stone vessel with it and lowering it into a Mikveh (of dirty water) until the waters 'kiss'. One may not, however, immerse the water using a wooden vessel. (This will be explained in the Gemara.)

(b)

One is permitted to immerse in order to switch from one Gav to another and from one Chaburah to another. (This will be explained in the Gemara.)

(c)

(Gemara): The Mishnah does not follow Rebbi, as the Beraisa teaches -

1.

Rebbi says: On Yom Tov, one may not immerse a vessel for the sake of its waters and on Shabbos, one may not 'kiss' the water in a stone vessel to purify it.

2.

Chachamim say: On Yom Tov, one may immerse a vessel for the sake of its waters and on Shabbos, one may 'kiss' the water in a stone vessel to purify it.

3.

The Chachamim only permitted a stone vessel, but not a wooden vessel (as the Tameh waters that are put in it will Metameh it). (See Pnei Moshe)

(d)

What is the meaning of 'from one Gav to another'? If his vessels were Tameh and he immersed them with intent to make his dough inside them in purity and he then decided to press his grapes of Terumah inside them, he must immerse them again. The same is true if he planned on using them for his grapes and then decided to use them for his dough. Since they are not Tameh when he immerses them, it is permitted.

(e)

What is the meaning of from Chaburah to Chaburah? If he immersed his vessels in order to eat Chulin with a certain Chaburah (group) and he decided to eat Maaser Sheni with another Chaburah, the second immersion that he must do may be done on Yom Tov.
