REVIEW QUESTIONS ON GEMARA AND RASHI

prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Previous daf

Bechoros 58

1)

(a) Rebbi Akiva gives the date of the first Goren as Pras ha'Pesach, Ben Azai as 29 Adar. What is their Machlokes?

(b) Why does Ben Azai give the date for the second Goren as Rosh Chodesh Sivan, rather than two weeks before Shevuos?

(c) Why does Ben Azai give his third Goren as the 29 Av, and not the 29 Elul?

(d) Why not on the 30 Av?

2)
(a) Considering that Rebbi Elazar and Rebbi Shimon don't hold of Pras, why do they give their first Goren as Rosh Chodesh Nisan?

(b) Why do they disagree with Ben Azai, to fix the third Goren on the 29 Elul?

3)
(a) Ben Azai was exceptionally sharp. Why could he not discern whether the Rosh Hashanah for Ma'aser Behemah was in Elul (like Rebbi Meir) or Tishrei (like Rebbi Elazar and Rebbi Shimon)?

(b) Ben Azai says that the animals born in Elul have Ma'aser taken from them independently. How does the Gemara describe this statement, and what is the Chidush?

(c) According to Ben Azai, what will be the Din if, in someone's flock, five lambs are born in Av, five in Elul, and five in Tishrei - and why?

(d) Why should the five from Tishrei not combine with another five born in that year, to have Ma'aser taken from them together with them?

4)

(a) How exactly, is the Ma'aser performed?

(b) What will be the Din if one did not mark the animal with red paint, or even use a stick. Or if one took Ma'aser from the animals while they were standing or crouching? (From where do we know this?)

(c) And what if he failed to declare each tenth animal Ma'aser? (From where do we know this?)

(d) Is it in order to simply remove ten per cent of the total number of animals? (two opinions and their sources)

5) What happens if one of the counted animals jumps back into the pen and we do not recognize it? Why?
