(Mishnah): The daughters of Tzalafchad took three portions of the inheritance - their father's portion as he was amongst those who left Mitzrayim; and their father's portion of his father Chefer's estate that was split with his brothers; and in addition, Tzalafchad was the firstborn (thereby meriting a double portion of that estate).

(Gemara): The daughters of Tzalafchad said to Moshe Rabbeinu - if we are the daughters of Tzalafchad, we should inherit our father. If we are not, our mother should be required to perform yibum. Moshe then took the claim of the daughters of Tzalafchad before Hash-m.

Hash-m said - "the daughters of Tzalafchad have spoken correctly. Give them a portion of inheritance." - this means - give them land; give them movables; give them their father's portion amongst the portions of their father's brothers.
